February 13, 2004ATS: It's Over For Angel
As of right now, there are only 9 episodes of 'Angel' left, period. Zap2It broke the news that Joss and Jeff Bell announced to the cast and crew this morning that the show would not be picked up for Season Six. In an Official WB Press Release, they confirmed the news and explained their reasoning for announcing it so early... "Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including Frasier and Friends, the cast, crew, writers and producers of Angel deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB." It doesn't rule out a return of Angel Investigations in the future, as the press released does mention... "We have discussed continuing the Angel legacy with special movie events next year, which is still on the table." I do find this a bit surprising, as the show has been performing well both in terms of ratings and critical acclaim. While I would hope that another network would be interested in picking up the show, I think this is going to be a tough sell. While the show does have a strong following and has a niche in the ratings, the cost/benefit ratio is probably going to be the biggest thing preventing this from happening. It just seems that Science Fiction is having a tough time making it on the broadcast networks. Herc over at Ain't It Cool News just posted on this as well. As more news stories come in, I'll post them in the news section. |
